How Long Does a Live Wedding Illustration Take?

One of the questions I get asked the most — whether I’m at a wedding, a fair, or even mid-sketch — is “how long does it take you to draw someone?”

The short answer? Around 10 minutes per person. But the truth is, it varies!

When I’m drawing live at weddings or events, I often work on several illustrations at once. This allows me to switch between them during the painting stage, giving each layer time to dry before I move on with the next colour. It’s a rhythm I’ve found works beautifully, keeping the flow natural while ensuring every illustration feels polished.

Children are included in that 10-minute average too. They can sometimes be a little trickier than adults — they wiggle, they fidget, and they don’t always hold still! But that’s part of the fun. I love capturing their personalities and the energy they bring to the day.

When I first started out, I drew directly in pen to save time, skipping the pencil stage altogether. It meant I could produce more sketches during an event, but I soon realised I wasn’t happy with the idea of sacrificing quality for speed. Over time, I’ve developed a balance between detail and efficiency, and I’m proud to say my couples love the results.

On your wedding day, my goal is always to illustrate as many of your guests as possible while keeping the process enjoyable and relaxed. If there isn't enough time to finish everyone on the day, I complete the remaining portraits back in my studio, so no one misses out on their keepsake.
